Who Am I?

About Me My name is Andres Rodriguez and I am 16 years old. I live in Flushing, New York and attend high school at World Journalism Preparatory School (WJPS). I am originally from Colombia, along with my parents  and three siblings. I enjoy expressing my ideas through writing, and that is where this blog has come through. In the future I want to get into the medical or engineering field, however, my journalistic background has helped improve my communication and writing skills altogether. I usually keep things to myself but that is bound to change as I grow older  and expose myself to new experiences.

Modern Day Leaders: Which Follow Locke's or Hobbes' Philosophies?

Image
Who Follows Thomas Hobbes' Philosophy: Kim Jong Un North Korean leader Kim Jong Un follows Thomas Hobbes’ philosophy. Kim is treated as if he was a king, or more accurately, a god. He is praised everywhere in North Korea and no one is allowed to badmouth him or they are punished. Kim controls the armed forces as well, and lives like a king while his people suffer with hunger and poverty. The people are stripped of their natural rights. They laid down their rights to Kim, however, he is not protecting them. The people are afraid to revolt, as it will most likely lead to their death. Kim’s power is hereditary, when his father died it was his turn to become leader. North Korea has been communist for decades, allowing for Kim to continue the trend. Since the previous leaders were treated greatly and had full control of their people, Kim saw no reason to change this, as he saw it as the rightful way to lead. Thomas Hobbes believed that the people could give up their na...

Locke or Hobbes: Whose ideas would be most useful today?

Image
John Locke’s ideas would be the most useful today.  John Locke believed that our natural rights, life, liberty, and property could not be stripped away or given up. He went against Hobbes, who believed that the people laid down their natural rights and gave absolute power to a sovereign.  The government cannot take people’s rights away, or else it would lead to chaos. With Thomas Hobbes, he believed once the people had given absolute power to the king, they had no right to revolt against him. This would lead to a place such as North Korea, where communism is the country’s form of government, an infamous system in many parts of the world. If every country in the world followed John Locke’s ways, they would have a more peaceful and thriving society, with happy citizens. If the world followed Thomas Hobbes’ ways, however, we would be backtracking and living in a world of oppression and inequality.    John Locke favored a representative government. Where the...

English Civil War & Glorious Revolution: What impact did they have on the development of Locke's and Hobbes' Philosophies?

In Terms of Hobbes The English Civil War shaped his philosophy. During the English Civil War, after Richard Cromwell was exiled, Parliament met once again. They asked the son of Charles I to become king and he accepted. After this, the next 25 years were known as the Restoration because the monarchy was restored. When Charles died, his brother James II became king. He tried very hard to give Catholics and Protestants equal rights. With the kings trying to do so much for their country, it was no wonder that Hobbes believed that the Kings should have absolute power. He saw them as the ones that will ensure peace among society. In terms of Locke The Glorious Revolution shaped his philosophy. Parliament forced James II out of the throne and invited James’ daughter and her husband William III of Orange to become king and queen.  Before they were crowned, they had to agree that Parliament was the lawmaking body in England, not the king. The king and queen also had to ...

Locke's & Hobbes' Critiques: Do I Agree or Disagree?

Image
Critiques of Thomas Hobbes : Absolute dictators are often overthrown. A sovereign violates individual rights extensively. Absolute power corrupts. Strong men in the commonwealth will seek to remove sovereign by force. My Opinion :  Nothing good can come from a king who has all the power. A government needs to be established in order to divide all that power, that way no one can abuse it. When someone or a group has too much power, they eventually start violating people’s rights. When people feel like they aren’t being treated correctly, they will revolt putting the country in a crisis. For example in North Korea, the current president has way too much power, which leads to the oppression of the people, making them have no say in what happens to their country. While in America, there is a division of power among branches, which is why our system of government has survived for so long. Critiques of John Locke: Consensus is often too hard to reach. Elected represe...

Locke's and Hobbes' Religious Views: How did it Impact their Thoughts on Government and Society?

Image
Locke Thomas Hobbes  He believed that the church should become a department of the king’s government, as he feared religion could potentially be a source for civil war. Hobbes believed that humans were free to do what they wanted in order to survive, however, they would suffer from continued fear and danger of death. Therefore, the people decided to lay down their natural rights of equality and freedom and give absolute power to a sovereign. John Locke He believed that humans could not be stripped of their natural rights of life, liberty, and property. They could not be taken away or given up. Locke favored a representative government, with a House of Lords and a House of Commons, he wanted the representatives to be men of property and business.
